Patek Philippe Chronograph Grande Taille Historical significance & concept With the introduction of the reference 5070 In 1998, the manufacture ended an almost 40-year break in the production of purely hand-wound chronographs without a perpetual calendar. Conceived as the direct successor to the legendary reference 1463, this model radically broke with the dimensions of classic dress watches that had been common up to that point. The case measures 42 mm in diameter, which earned the watch the nickname „Grande Taille“. This example from 18k white gold dates from the year 2004 and marks an important era in the modern history of Patek Philippe. Caliber & Mechanics Inside, the renowned Caliber CH 27-70, which is based on a Lemania 2310-Ébauche and has been extensively modified in the Patek Philippe workshops. It is considered by experts to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing chronograph movements in watchmaking. The construction features a Shift wheel control, a horizontal clutch and a Screw balance. As the watch was manufactured before 2009, the movement bears the prestigious Geneva seal (Poinçon de Genève) on the bridges, which are also equipped with Côtes de Genève are refined. The frequency is classic 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour. Case & Aesthetics The case body made of 18k white gold is characterized by a striking, double-stepped bezel and curved lugs. The dial in Silver (Argenté) offers a high contrast thanks to the oxidized gold hands in feuille style and the applied Arabic numerals. The symmetrical arrangement of the sub-dials at 3 and 9 o'clock and the external tachymeter scale emphasize the instrumental character.
